Rescue pets bring something truly special into our lives. They carry stories of resilience, hope, and transformation and when they find their forever families, the love they give is beyond measure.Â
Today, we’re shining a light on the incredible journeys of rescue pets and the many ways we can all help give them the second chances they deserve.
Why Rescue Pets Make Incredible Companions
There’s something magical about the bond with a rescue pet. Many have faced challenges early in life, but once they feel safe, their gratitude and loyalty shine through in beautiful ways. Rescue pets often develop a strong connection with their adopters, becoming deeply attuned to the people who gave them a second chance.
Not only do they bring joy, laughter, and unconditional love, but they also remind us daily of the power of resilience. Every happy tail wag, gentle purr, or cozy cuddle feels extra meaningful when you know what they’ve overcome to get there.
Uplifting Stories from Our Team
We’re lucky enough to have several team members who have opened their hearts to rescue pets and the stories are truly inspiring!
Emily: This is my rescue pup Ollie, he’s a chiweenie! We got him when he was about 3 years old on Valentine’s Day. Throughout the 7 years we’ve had him his growing trust and his loving personality is something my family and I just adore.

Marissa: Miley’s was rescued from a puppy mill in New York. A woman saw the bad conditions and took Miley, along with some other puppies and a mama, to New Hampshire to keep them safe. Then one day, I got a text about a puppy in need. I facetimed the woman and decided to meet her. From that moment, Miley became a part of my fam!Â

Laura: Mia’s mom princess was surrendered to a vet from a backyard breeder and I fostered the litter. They all found homes through Save a Dog but I kept Mia and my mom kept her sister Kimba. Mia lived a very healthy and full life for 12.5 years sharing her time with a doggy brother and human brother for some of those. She lived for the beach and early morning cuddles and we are still grateful today that vets office called Save A Dog!

Brendan: My pal Hector and I met in July 2012 when he crawled out from underneath a car parked in front of my apartment in Medford and said hello. For a few weeks I had been thinking of adopting my first cat and was searching adoption websites.... And then he just showed up! It was clear he was living on the street. I fed him some canned tuna and held the door for him to see if he wanted to come inside. We've been best friends ever since.

Emmie: Moonshine was found underneath a porch with his poor siblings and mother who had passed away. The humane society grabbed him, and he was put up for adoption once he cleared his health issues. I adopted Moonshine from The Gifford Cat shelter.
Moonshine is now safe and also has made many, many friends of all ages thru sitting in his window with his cat tree. It is street level on Moody Street, so many people take selfies and talk to him each day. I love that for him! I was able to give him a home and the public has given him further love and attention.

Sidney: This is my kitty Bif I adopted her when I first moved to Waltham about 2 years ago now. I adopted her from a rescue where I am from in New York. I just love her so much we’ve navigated living in a new city together through ups and downs, she’s my soul cat.

Betsy: Meet Figgy! Figgy was rescued from a bad hoarding situation. ARL took in 46 cats, to be adopted out. Figgy was deemed "unadoptable" and was rescued by some Gifford volunteers. Gifford, is a no kill shelter, with a great socialization program. Figgy came home shortly before Covid hit, and working from home really helped him become a confident and social boy. He is hands down the sweetest cat!

Nina: This is Albedo. We rescued him through Melrose Humane Society, specifically this guy Roy, who takes his job rescuing and homing animals VERY seriously. Albedo was found with his mother and two brothers, he was the only fluffy one. Mom and brothers were not doing so well, but Albedo was a fighter! He is king of the castle, we all live to cater to him and his needs, and he has many. But we love him!!

Kamelia: After my kitty Alby (who really made me a cat mom) passed away in July 2020, it took me 2 years before I was ready to open my heart again to another kitty. Abricot (aka Pumpkin aka Punky 😻) came from the Dedham ARL. She was shy, cautious, and curious, and stayed under the couch for 2-3 days, exploring the apartment at night. My years with Alby and taking care of our clients' kitties, as well as my patience, helped Abricot become the confident, brave, and happy girl she is now!
These are just a few of the countless stories that prove rescue pets don’t just change — they change us too.

Angela: Oki is my sweet 14-year-old pup who came into my life thanks to Save A Dog. She has a gentle soul, a brilliant mind, and a heart full of love. She’s been my steady companion through so many chapters of life.
Back in 2010, I lost my German Shepherd, Chaos, and while I was devastated, it was my other dog Hugo who truly felt the void. Hugo had always loved his kitty siblings, but he missed the unique bond that comes with a fellow canine friend. He needed a buddy to walk with, play with, and just be a dog with.
When the time felt right, I brought Hugo to the shelter and let him help pick his new friend. He met 12 different dogs that day, but the moment he met Oki, we knew. She was the one. From that day on, she became a beloved member of our family.
Oki is incredibly smart and endlessly sweet. She’s always up for a walk and never turns down a treat! Over the years, she’s faced more than her fair share of medical challenges, but she has taken each one in stride. Her resilience is truly inspiring! She bounces back with a grace and quiet strength that continues to amaze me.
She has taught me so much, but most of all, she’s shown me how important it is to live in the moment. To not take the small things for granted. We soak in every walk, every tail wag, every demand bark, and every chance to snuggle (even though it’s not her favorite thing to do).
Oki is not just a good dog. She’s one of the best and I’m so lucky Hugo choose her to come home with us!

Ways to Support Shelters If You Can’t Adopt
Not everyone is in a position to adopt, and that’s okay! Every little bit makes a difference!
There are so many other ways to help rescue pets find their happy endings:
Volunteer Your Time: Shelters are always looking for help with walking dogs, socializing cats, cleaning enclosures, and supporting events.
Foster a Pet: Fostering provides a much-needed break from the shelter environment and helps pets adjust to life in a loving home.
Donate Supplies: Blankets, toys, food, litter, and cleaning products are always appreciated.
Sponsor a Pet: Many organizations offer sponsorship opportunities to cover care costs for animals waiting for adoption.
Spread the Word: Sharing posts about adoptable pets and adoption events can help them find their perfect families faster.
Every Pet Deserves a Loving Home
Rescue pets remind us of the extraordinary power of love, patience, and hope. Whether you’re able to adopt, foster, volunteer, or simply share their stories, you’re part of creating a world where every pet gets the chance to be safe, happy, and loved.
Because at the end of the day, every pet, no matter their past, deserves a home where they are cherished for exactly who they are.
