The Fourth of July is a time for celebration with backyard barbecues, parades, and of course, fireworks lighting up the night sky. While the festivities may bring joy to us humans, they can be downright terrifying for our pets. The loud booms, flashing lights, and unfamiliar commotion can trigger intense fear, anxiety, and even flight responses in dogs and cats.

With a little planning and care, you can help your furry family members feel safe and secure during the holiday.

Create a Safe Space at Home

As fireworks fill the sky, having a calm, cozy spot for your pet to retreat to can make a big difference. Here’s how to set one up:

  • Choose a quiet, enclosed room away from windows, like a bathroom, laundry room, or basement.

  • Include familiar comforts such as their bed, favorite toys, or an item of your clothing

  • Close curtains and blinds to block out flashing lights

  • Play white noise, calming music, or TV to help drown out firework sounds

  • Stay close if you can. Your presence can be incredibly reassuring

Use Calming Tools and Try Desensitization

Many pets benefit from extra support when it comes to loud holiday celebrations:

  • Pheromone diffusers and sprays can help soothe nerves

  • Thundershirts or calming wraps provide gentle pressure that can ease anxiety

  • Natural calming treats or vet-recommended medications may help if your pet gets especially stressed. Just be sure to talk to your vet in advance

  • Desensitization can be helpful for future holidays. Playing firework sounds at low volume while rewarding calm behavior can help pets build resilience over time

What to Do If Your Pet Escapes

Independence Day sees one of the highest rates of lost pets each year, so take steps ahead of time:

  • Make sure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are current

  • Double-check that doors, gates, and windows are secure

  • Keep a recent photo on hand in case you need to create a lost pet alert

If your pet does go missing:

  • Contact local shelters, vets, and animal control immediately

  • Post on social media and neighborhood apps like Nextdoor or local Facebook groups

  • Leave out familiar scents like their bed or a piece of your clothing to help guide them home

  • Contact Missing Dogs Massachusetts or Wandering Paws K9

Celebrate Safely with Your Pets in Mind

Your pet doesn’t have to fear the Fourth. With a bit of preparation and a whole lot of love, you can help them feel safe and supported through the holiday.

If you’ll be out enjoying the fireworks in person, keep your pet at home, and consider booking one of our experienced pet sitters to keep your pet company and comforted while you’re away from home.

Here’s to a happy, safe, and pet-friendly Independence Day!
