Halloween is full of costumes, candy, decorations, and excitement, but for our furry friends, it can also bring unexpected stress and safety risks. With a little planning, you can help your dog or cat enjoy a safe and comfortable Halloween!

Keep Candy Out of Reach

Halloween treats are for humans, not pets! Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, and candies containing xylitol (also called birch sugar) can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Candy wrappers can also cause choking or intestinal blockages.

Keep candy bowls and trick or treat bags safely out of reach. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison control service immediately.

Costumes Should Be Comfortable, Not Stressful

While pets in costumes can be adorable, not every animal enjoys dressing up! If your pet seems uncomfortable, freezes, tries to escape, or shows signs of stress, skip the costume.

Choose lightweight outfits that don't restrict movement, breathing, hearing, or vision. Never leave a costumed pet unattended. A festive bandana can be a great alternative for pets who prefer something simple!

Plan Ahead for Doorbells and Visitors

A steady stream of trick or treaters, unfamiliar costumes, and ringing doorbells can overwhelm even the friendliest pets.

Consider keeping your pet in a quiet room away from the front door with their favorite bed, toys, and enrichment activities. White noise or calming music may help reduce outside distractions.

If your dog enjoys visitors, make sure they're safely secured before opening the door. Even well behaved pets can become startled and slip outside unexpectedly.

Create a Safe Space

Halloween can be particularly challenging for pets who are sensitive to noises, strangers, or changes in their environment.

Give your pet the option to retreat to a familiar, comfortable space where they won't be disturbed. Never force them to interact with visitors or participate in festivities. Respecting their choices helps build confidence and trust.

If your pet has significant noise anxiety, speak with your veterinarian ahead of time about ways to help them feel more comfortable.

Double Check Identification

With doors opening frequently, Halloween is a good reminder to check that your pet's identification tags are current and their microchip registration information is up to date.

Even if your pet isn't joining the festivities, taking these precautions provides an extra layer of protection if they accidentally escape.
