Taking your pets with you? Make sure to plan ahead. The holidays are full of excitement, but when your furry (or feathered) family members are part of the adventure, a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping everyone happy and stress-free.
What to Pack
When it comes to traveling with pets, think of their suitcase like your own, filled with comfort and essentials. Include:
Food and treats: Bring enough for the entire trip plus a few extra days, in case of delays.
Water and bowls: A collapsible bowl is perfect for on-the-go hydration.
Medication and first-aid kit: Keep prescriptions and emergency supplies handy.
Leash, harness, and ID tags: Safety first. Make sure all tags are up-to-date with your contact info.
Favorite blanket or toy: Familiar scents help your pet feel at home wherever you go.
Waste bags or litter supplies: Be a courteous traveler and clean up after your pet.
Car Travel vs. Flying with Pets
Car travel: Most pets do best in familiar surroundings. For road trips, secure them safely in a crash-tested crate or harness, keep the car cool, and take regular breaks for stretching and potty time. Avoid feeding right before departure to minimize motion sickness.
Flying: Air travel can be trickier. Always check the airline’s pet policies before booking. Use a well-ventilated carrier labeled with your name, phone number, and “Live Animal.” If your pet travels in the cabin, make sure the carrier fits comfortably under the seat. For pets in cargo, book direct flights whenever possible and avoid extreme temperatures.
Keeping Routines Consistent While Away
Pets thrive on predictability, so do your best to maintain their regular feeding, walking, and play schedules. Bring their usual food, and stick to familiar cues and routines. If you’re visiting family or staying in a new space, designate a quiet “safe zone” where your pet can relax away from the bustle of guests and festivities. Consistency provides comfort and reduces the chance of stress-related behavior or tummy troubles.
With thoughtful preparation, traveling with pets during the holidays can be joyful for everyone. From car rides to flights and cozy cabin stays, a little planning ensures your pets are safe, comfortable, and ready to make new memories alongside you. Safe travels for your whole crew!
