Summer is officially here! It is the peak season for outdoor adventures, splashing in the water, and soaking up the sun but it also brings along some seasonal risks for our furry friends. Whether you're hitting the beach, the trails, or just your own backyard, a little planning goes a long way in keeping pets safe, healthy, and happy.

Here’s our go-to summer pet safety checklist:

Pool and Water Safety

Not all pets are natural swimmers! If your dog is joining you poolside or lakeside this summer, be sure to supervise them closely around water.

Tips for safe water play:

  • Use a pet life vest for dogs who are new to swimming or not strong swimmers.

  • Always rinse off after a swim to remove chlorine, salt, or bacteria.

  • Block access to pools when not in use. Many pets don’t understand how to exit safely.

  • Teach a reliable “come” cue in case of unexpected leaps into the water.

Hot Pavement and Paw Protection

If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws! Asphalt and concrete absorb heat quickly and can burn sensitive paw pads in minutes.

There are several ways to protect those paws:

  • Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces are cooler.

  • Stick to grassy areas or shaded trails.

  • Consider paw balm or breathable booties for added protection.

  • Always carry water and take breaks in the shade to prevent overheating.

Pest Control and Prevention

With warm weather comes fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests that can make your pet miserable and sick.

Here are some tips to stay ahead of summer pests:

  • Use vet-recommended flea and tick preventatives.

  • Regularly check your pet (and yourself!) for ticks after hikes or time outdoors.

  • Remove standing water to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.

  • Ask your vet about heartworm prevention, especially during peak mosquito season.

Plan Ahead for a Pawsitively Safe Summer

With just a little preparation, you can help your pet stay cool, comfortable, and protected all summer long. From backyard BBQs to weekend hikes, planning for safety means more freedom to enjoy all the season has to offer.
