Bringing home a new shelter cat is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming for your new feline family member. Everything is unfamiliar, from the smells and sounds to the people and routines. The first week is all about helping your cat feel safe, secure, and comfortable at their own pace.

One of the best ways to ease the transition is by setting up a quiet “safe room.” This small, calm space gives your cat a chance to decompress without feeling overwhelmed by an entire home. Include essentials like food and water bowls, a cozy bed, toys, scratching surfaces, and a litter box placed away from eating areas. Many cats feel safest when they have hiding spots available, such as covered beds, blankets draped over chairs, or cardboard boxes they can retreat into when needed.

Vertical space can also help build confidence. Cat trees, shelves, or window perches allow cats to observe their environment from a safe distance and feel more in control of their surroundings.

During those first few days, predictable routines matter. Feeding at the same times each day, moving calmly through the space, and allowing your cat to approach you on their own terms can help build trust. Some cats settle in quickly, while others need more time, and that’s completely normal.

Our team understands how important those early adjustment periods can be. During visits, we carefully monitor eating habits, litter box use, body language, and overall behavior so we can notice subtle changes that may signal stress, discomfort, or growing confidence. We document what we observe and communicate updates to pet parents so everyone stays informed and supported throughout the transition. By keeping routines calm, consistent, and low stress, we help new cats feel safe while giving families peace of mind during those important first weeks at home.
