Summer sunshine, cool breezes, and the sound of splashing water. It’s the perfect recipe for a dog-friendly adventure! Whether you're heading to a salty seaside shore or a calm freshwater lake, water play can be a fun and enriching experience for your pup. But before you pack up the beach towels and dog treats, it's important to plan ahead to make sure your outing is as safe as it is fun.
Know Before You Go: Check the Rules
Before diving into the fun, take a moment to research the rules at your chosen destination. Many beaches and lakes have specific hours, seasons, or designated zones for dogs. Some locations welcome pups off-leash, while others strictly require leashes at all times or prohibit dogs entirely. Rules can also change from year to year, so it’s smart to check with local authorities or websites before you go.
Here are a few things to look for:
Are dogs allowed year-round, seasonally, or only during off-peak hours?
Do leash laws apply, even in the water?
Are there areas where dogs are prohibited, such as picnic zones or bird nesting areas?
Are waste stations provided or should you pack your own supplies?
Being in the know helps keep your outing stress-free and respectful to fellow beachgoers, wildlife, and the environment.
Life Jackets & Leash Laws: Safety First
Even the strongest swimmers can benefit from a dog life jacket, especially in deep water, strong currents, or boating situations. Look for a well-fitted jacket with a handle on top so you can guide or lift your dog if needed.
Leashes may still be required even in designated dog areas. A long-line leash can give your dog the freedom to explore while ensuring you stay in control. Be sure to keep your pup nearby and responsive to cues like "come" or "leave it" to help avoid run-ins with wildlife, sharp debris, or other beach visitors.
Saltwater vs. Freshwater: What to Know
Both saltwater and freshwater environments offer different experiences and considerations for your dog.
Saltwater tips:
Don’t let your dog drink the ocean! Saltwater can quickly upset your dog’s stomach and cause dehydration.
Rinse off your dog after a swim to remove salt, sand, and algae that can irritate their skin or paws.
Watch for signs of fatigue. Waves and tides can tire out dogs faster than calm lake waters.
Freshwater tips:
Be aware of blue-green algae, especially in warm, stagnant water. Some types are toxic and can be fatal if ingested.
Always offer clean drinking water. Lakes can harbor bacteria or parasites like Giardia.
Check for leeches or burrs around lake edges.
Dry-Off Routines & Post-Water Care
Once playtime is over, take a few moments for post-water care to keep your dog comfortable and healthy.
Use a towel to dry off thoroughly, paying special attention to ears, armpits, and between the toes.
Rinse with fresh water if possible to remove sand, salt, or lake gunk.
Gently clean your pup’s ears with a vet-approved solution to prevent infections—especially important for floppy-eared breeds.
Inspect for scrapes, ticks, or any irritation, and give your dog a chance to rest in a shady spot or cool indoor space.
A simple care routine after water adventures can go a long way in keeping your pup feeling great.
Make a Splash Responsibly
Water adventures can be a blast and a great way to bond with your pup, but a little preparation goes a long way. From checking local rules to packing the right gear, your efforts will help ensure safe, respectful fun for everyone.
Dip those paws in the water, wag those tails, and soak up the sun. Just remember to splash safely and responsibly!
