Father’s Day is the perfect excuse to fire up the grill, gather with loved ones, and soak up the sunshine. But while we’re celebrating our favorite dads, uncles, grandpas, and pet dads, it’s important not to forget our four-legged family members. Holidays and cookouts can introduce a mix of hazards for pets, from tempting (but toxic!) foods to wide-open doors and overwhelming noise.

With a little prep and awareness, you can keep the vibe fun and your pets safe. Here’s how to make your Father’s Day BBQ pet-friendly from start to finish.

Keep Toxic Foods Off the Menu (for Pets!)

Barbecue food smells amazing but especially to pets but some popular dishes can be dangerous or even deadly for dogs and cats. Make sure guests know not to feed your pet, and keep plates out of reach.

Watch out for:

  • Bones and fatty meats (risk of choking and pancreatitis)

  • Onions, garlic, and chives (toxic to both dogs and cats)

  • Corn cobs (a common blockage risk)

  • Alcohol and beer (even a small amount can cause serious health issues)

  • Chocolate, grapes, and xylitol (found in some desserts and gums)

If your pet is a known food swiper, consider crating them during mealtime or setting up a quiet space away from the food zone.

Guest Management and Escape-Proofing

With doors swinging open and visitors coming and going, it’s easy for a curious or spooked pet to make a dash for it.

Before the party starts, do a safety check:

  • Ensure all fences and gates are secure.

  • Remind guests to close doors and not let pets out.

  • Use baby gates or closed rooms to limit access if needed.

  • ID tags and microchips should be up to date just in case.

For pets who aren’t into crowds or are easily startled, it’s okay to keep them separated altogether during the party. Not every pup or kitty loves a party so it is best to respect their space.

Offer a Quiet Retreat for Downtime

Just like some humans, pets can feel overwhelmed with noise, music, new scents, and unfamiliar faces. To prevent stress, make sure there’s a calm, cozy space they can retreat to.

  • Set up a quiet room with a fan or white noise machine.

  • Include fresh water, their bed, and a favorite toy.

  • Consider using calming sprays, diffusers, or music designed for pet relaxation.

Let guests, especially young children, know not to bother your pet when they’re resting. This helps prevent fear-based reactions and gives your pet the control they need to feel safe.
